Explain why it is important for chromosomes to replicate before mitosis begins?

so that chromosome number is conserved. if our DNA didnt replicate we would be ping on half of our own dna to our offspring..so we would be left with 1/2 of what we originally had and we would end up being haploid......this definetly isnt a good thing!
