Dell desktop up grade?

I purchased a 1GB memory, and a 400 GB hard Drive for my Dell desktop, installed them, Now how do I get my computer back up and running? It was working before the change, only very slow. I was hoping to upgrade it. I now can't get it back up and running. Anyone have a simple answer to this? Sammy J.
