Best states to live in for outdoor activities?

I currently live in Ohio and my husband hates it here. He enjoys outdoor sports such as mountain biking, running, snowboarding, ect. Ohio seems to be more of an industrial state wit limited free activities. People mostly have fun by going shopping and out to eat. That's about all there is to do here. My hubby thinks California would be the best state to move to. However, my daughter has asthma and I've heard about smog out there. What ares of California are good for bking and hiking and not very crowded, and have nice weather all year long? Any other states you would reccommend for an active outdoorsman? Yet, family friendly and a small town atmosphere.
